Subject: Tape Hiss?
Subject: Tape Hiss?
First of all there is very little hiss on this recording. That guy who can't spell, probably had his eq jacked up or something. Just like the 20th and 21st, this is the best sounding aud source for this show. Upgrade on the Holwein source. Neat show, again the first set is great with Hamza. Set 2 pre drums lacks a bit after Fire, but from drums on is great.

A word on 10/22/78 - going to type on this source's review section due to the opening of the show and "Ollin Arageed" - this recording of the pageantry and sublime beauty of what was achieved that night in Winterland is best captured here. Usually I'm wary of overabundant crowd noise and idle chatter, etc. - but listening to this, seriously, bless each and every one of you that night at Winterland who contributed to this - it goes beyond mere "audience participation" - the crowd clearly hones in on what is not the easiest percussion time in the world and, within a few minutes is totally synched up. When the band arrives onstage there is the usual hooting and whistling, etc., but those who realize they're ACTUALLY MAKING GODDAMNED MUSIC WITH THE GRATEFUL DEAD continue, and the audience's presence is more than just an aside; it becomes an integral and vital part of the rhythm section as the overall sound builds to a nice, loud level. This is one of my most treasured moments in ANY Grateful Dead show - it's not often I want to stand up and salute the crowd, but in this case, whomever you all were - this is just simply fantastic.
I tend to go into the soundboard for a great bulk of this show - nugs.net has a decent (if flawed) board available for download - Jack Straw is a great highlight from the first set as a closer - check the way Bobby draws out "sllooooooooowwwwwwwwww...."
Set 2 - worth using the board for the intricate hi-hat work on Scarlet > Fire - this is a delicate, floating, tight rendition of the suite, and deserves to be heard.
The NFA > MJB > Caution > GDTRFB motif has been expounded and written about a lot, so I'll just leave it - this aud source again captures the energy that builds during the last, incredible pull.
All of these highlights easily make this, for me, the best of the five nights at Winterland '78. Really, though, kick back and let that Ollin Arageed creation wash over you - you'll gain a profound respect for the moment that 'group mind' becomes 'group art'.
